The Indian drug maker has been forced to pull its biggest-selling drug after a US court ruled that its marketing of Viagra had been illegal.

The ruling by US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in Philadelphia on Thursday gave way to a US appeals court ruling on Friday that upheld the validity of a patent on a popular erectile dysfunction drug called Cialis.

Viagra has been sold under the brand name Cialis for more than 15 years and is now marketed as a cheaper alternative to the widely used pill.

Viagra has had sales of more than $3.3 billion worldwide in the three years to 2014, according to the US market research firm IMS Health.

Since the patent was set to expire in April 2014, Viagra sales have been falling steadily over the past few years, the drug maker said in a statement.

In its statement, the company said Viagra was introduced to men with the condition for life to "improve the quality of life".

It said the drug was being marketed as a cheaper alternative to Cialis.

The drug works by relaxing the blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow into the penis during sexual arousal, but unlike Cialis, it does not affect a person's heart rate or blood pressure.

Viagra's patent expired in April 2014, and the drug is now marketed as a cheaper alternative to Cialis.

The ruling was made in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, which is one of the biggest cases in US history.

In April, the US Supreme Court invalidated the patent, ruling that it was not effective.

Judge William R. du Boer, who has presided over the case, also ruled that Viagra's patent was invalid and the drug was being sold as a cheaper alternative.

Viagra sales have been falling steadily over the past few years, the company said.

The drug is marketed as a cheaper alternative to the widely used pill, with an increased range of strengths of 100mg and 200mg.

The company also said that Viagra's patent has expired and the drug is now sold in India and other countries, including the US.

The court ruling means that the drug maker is not legally bound to comply with the patent.

The patent is set to expire in April 2014, but Pfizer's patent expired in 2007.

Pfizer, the world's largest manufacturer of prescription drugs and an innovation-led giant, said that Viagra's patent is still valid in the US and India.

JAPANIAN (AP) — A drugmaker says it can pay a Japanese court case to challenge its patent on Viagra.

A spokesman for Ranbaxy Laboratories said the company was in the market for the drug and would seek a ruling from the Federal Court.

The Japanese drugmaker said Wednesday it would pay a total of $6.6 billion to settle a case that alleges the drugmaker had failed to market a cheaper version of the medication.

The case comes after a drug company was found to be in violation of the patent of a drug called sildenafil citrate, also known as Viagra, by Ranbaxy.

Japan's patent for the pill expired in 2004. However, it has since been challenged in the United States by a Chinese company, Ranbaxy.

Ranbaxy did not respond to a request for comment.

Sildenafil is used to treat male sexual dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

A generic version of the drug, Viagra, was launched by Ranbaxy last year.

The drugmaker said it had filed a patent application with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration to market the drug.

Japan's patent for the drug was set to expire in 2006.
